How to Write a Great Bartending Resume
Writing a good bartender resume is the first and most important step in getting your foot in the door as a bartender at your local bar, pub or nightclub.
Your bartending resume is a picture of you and your abilities. It is meant to give your future employer a good idea of what you would be like if they were to hire you. Put in the time and effort to write a grammatically correct, professional-looking bartending resume.
When deciding how to write your bartender resume, decide first if you want it to be serious and formal or relaxed and informal. From there you’ll want to highlight your best traits, skills and / or experience. If you have a lot of experience but don’t have a post-secondary education, simply leave off the education section.
And vice versa, if you have a bartending certificate, a mixology certificate and a draught masters certification and no real experience, put these items first when crafting your bartender resume.
IMPORTANT TIPS FOR WRITING A WINNING BARTENDER RESUME
Never lie on your bartender resume
Chances are, the prospective employer is going to find out one way or another – through the “grapevine” or by your performance. And the end is, inevitably dismissal.
Always use spell check
And always read through it – out loud – to make sure it sounds ok and that there aren’t any errors that the spell check missed.
Read it aloud to a couple of different people. You will gain a different perspective and valuable feedback the more people you read it to.
Make sure it looks professional
Again, this is your one and only chance to shine before actually getting the bar interview. Take the extra time and effort to format your bartending resume before it leaves your hands.
Stand out from the crowd
Bars and nightclubs get so many resumes that it becomes almost impossible to remember the faces that dropped them off. Make your bartending resume just a bit different than everyone elses and it’ll help you stick out from the crowd.
Your bartender resume is the only thing that the hiring manager sees when s/he is thinking about giving you a call to come in for a bar interview. They don’t see what you look like, how bubbly and outgoing you are, how great your customer service skills are or that you are able to tell the difference between lagers, ales and stouts. So, you have to be able to convey those attributes on your resume.
If your bartending resume doesn’t look good, you won’t get the chance to shine and sell yourself during the bar interview.
as you’d put into the job if given the opportunity.

- You need to know how to lay out the information in a way that will grab the attention of the hiring manager.

- You need to know how to effectively market your previous skills – in a way that they transfer seamlessly to the bartending position you’re applying for.
In today’s competitive job marketplace, it’s not enough to have experience. You need to be able to convey that experience through a well-written, professional-looking bartending resume.
If you’re looking for someone to write a bartending resume for you – one that will get you that bar interview, keep reading.
My name is Reese Richards (that’s me on the right) and I’m the founder of this site, Bars-and-Bartending.com. I’ve been in the bar industry since back in 1992 when I worked my way up from hosting and serving to bartending and then managing. I’ve managed bars in multiple cities in multiple countries around the world. In that time, I’ve seen literally thousands upon thousands of bartenders resumes.
It still amazes me today how many absolutely horrible bartending resumes are out there – how many people just don’t take the time to write a professional looking bartender resume.
Now, it may be that they just don’t know how – and that’s okay. Maybe they’re not good at writing, not good with words, don’t know how to put what’s in their head on paper etc – and really that’s not their fault. But what is their fault is not getting someone else to help them write their bartenders resume; or finding someone to write their bartending resume for them.
Your bartending resume is thee single most important thing when it comes to getting that bartending job you want. It’s the only thing that a bar manager is looking at when s/he is deciding whether or not to call you in for a bar interview.
The cost of having someone write a bartender resume for you is minimal when you consider the big picture. As I’m sure you’re aware, bartenders can make VERY good money behind the bar. On average, a decent bartender can make an easy $100 per shift.
To lend this some credibility, I’ll tell you about my last experience consulting for a nightclub in Canada.
Saturday nights were our busy nights and we had 4 bartenders on and one cocktail waitress. The bartenders consistently made $300 / night IN TIPS ALONE plus their hourly wage. The top bartender took home $400 / night on more than one occasion.

But this is an investment – an investment in your future bartending career. An investment that will be paid back after one or two bartending shifts.
P.P.S – You can go ahead with the bartending resume you currently have, run out and hand out resume after resume. Heck, you could even try that first. But, I’ve been on both sides of the fence. I’ve been the guy handing out bartender resumes and I’ve been the guy receiving bartenders resumes. And, what I’ve learned from both sides of that fence is this: great bartending resumes get interviews.
P.P.P.S – Think of it this way: the quicker you get a bartending job, the quicker you’ll be making cash. So, it’s like you’re hiring me to speed up that process for you.
The choice is yours – stick with the bartenders resume you have, keep handing them out and pray that someone calls you for a bar interview.
